
A tresse donut (braided donut) is a beautiful, twisted pastry that is soft, fluffy, and often coated in sugar or glaze. Here’s a simple recipe to make them at home!
Ingredients (Makes about 8-10 donuts)
For the Dough:
- 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (50g) sugar
- 1 packet (7g) instant yeast
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk
- 1 large egg
- 3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying:
- Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
For Coating (Optional):
- ½ cup (100g) sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- Or a glaze made of powdered sugar + milk
Instructions
1. Make the Dough:
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Add warm milk, egg, butter, and vanilla, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- Cover and let the dough rise for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
2. Shape the Donuts:
- Divide the dough into small balls, then roll each into thin ropes (about 8 inches long).
- Braid two or three strands together, then pinch the ends to seal.
- Place on a floured surface, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
3. Fry the Donuts:
- Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
- Fry 2-3 donuts at a time for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
4. Coat & Serve:
- Roll in sugar and cinnamon while warm OR
- Dip in glaze (powdered sugar + a little milk)
